Wrenaxis Prime was inhabited once, and the system is in close proximity (like 10s or 100s of lightyears) to a star the went supernova and is now a pulsar. This is a rare pulsar in that it actually gives off it’s jets at visible wavelengths and has a low (few second) rotational period—having a front row (but not too close) seat to a visible-wavelength pulsar has given the system the nickname The Lighthouse.
When the pulsar supernoved, it wiped out Wrenaxis Prime’s atmosphere, destroying the burgeoning civ their and turning the planet into a nothing more then a giant asteroid. Yet, because Wrenaxis is in a sort of “goldilocks zone” in it’s distance from the unique gravity well of a pulsar enables a rare slipstream gate construction that supports a greater then average number of incoming and outgoing lanes.
I’m thinking that the inhabitants of the system are really all just transplants from the other systems in the cluster, initially there to service the megagate but later they realized it was just easier to do the trading in-system. The lends itself to possibly interesting politics of the system, like i’m thinking Deep Space 9 if the Federation didn’t own it—or maybe even there was some initial outposts from all the other governments in the cluster there and at some point they people actually living there decided they were getting compensated enough and rebelled and became self sufficient. I dunno could do a lot of stuff here.
